BUYING REAL ESTATE IN SWITZERLAND

The acquisition of real estate by persons abroad has been liberalised on a piecemeal basis since 1997 and adjusted in line with international requirements.  The Bilateral Agreement I, which Switzerland and the EU have signed up to, has further strengthened this trend. The last amendment, dated 1 April 2005, made it easier for listed companies to acquire shares in real estate companies.

In respect of the regulations, a distinction is made between acquiring real estate directly and indirectly:
